Summertime is the best time of year! The weather is warm and sunny, there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy, and the days are long. If you’re looking for some fun things to do in Fairfield this summer, look no further! We’ve put together a list of our favorite activities that will keep you entertained all season long. Whether you’re into swimming, hiking, or simply relaxing in the sun, we have something to make your summer memorable.
- Cool off with Ice Cream.
There’s nothing quite like a cold scoop of ice cream on a hot summer day. Luckily, Fairfield has no shortage of great places to get your fix. Our personal favorite is a Sundae from the Dairy Bar, where you can get creative with your toppings and enjoy some delicious homemade fudge. If you’re looking for something a little lighter, try the Big Acai shop on the Square. Start with a sorbet of choice and add toppings to your heart’s content. No matter how you like your ice cream, you’ll be sure to find a place that suits your taste in Fairfield.
- Take a dip in the pool.
What’s summer without a trip to the pool? Whether you’re looking to do some laps or just lounge around in the sun, Fairfield has a traditional pool experience at the Community indoor & outdoor pool, complete with a water slide! If you’re looking for something a little more unique, try the beach at Waterworks Park where you can swim in a natural setting along the lake.
- Hike (or bike) the trails.
Fairfield is home to some beautiful nature trails, perfect for a summer hike. 16 miles of trail will fly by fast as you explore prairies, woods, and wetlands. If you’re feeling adventurous, try a bike ride on some of the area’s gravel or dirt roads. The hills are manageable, even though the terrain will give you a run for your money.
- Shop at the Farmers Market
Looking for fresh, locally-grown produce? Look no further than the Fairfield Farmers Market. Open every Saturday from May to October, the Farmers Market is the perfect place to find all of your summertime essentials. Beyond the fruits and vegetables, flowers, and baked goods, you’ll also be entertained by local musicians and treated to local artwork.
- Get out on the water
Up for a little fishing or canoeing? Three retired water reservoirs in Fairfield are refreshing places to go cool off and enjoy the lush greenery and to kayak, canoe, swim and fish. Or try the Cedar Creek Water Trail which uses a 6- mile scenic section of Cedar Creek, or the 72-mile Skunk River Water Trail which passes through Keokuk, Washington, Jefferson, and Henry counties.
- Take in an outdoor music concert
Every summer, the town of Fairfield hosts a series of free outdoor concerts. On Tuesday evenings, grab a blanket and head to the Central Park for an evening of live concerts under the stars featuring the local Community Band. Or enjoy the monthly Live on the Square events featuring local and regional talent. The Fairfield Arts & Convention Center also hosts outdoor concerts on Thursday evenings throughout the summer with everything from jazz to country to rock.
- Refreshing beverages
Looking to beat the heat? Cool down and chill with locally crafted (and award-winning) ciders and wine. Enjoy a summer sunset on the patio at Fishback & Stephenson Cider House while sipping on one of their unique ciders. Or spend an afternoon enjoying the fruits of the vine at the Cedar Valley Winery. For a truly unique experience, can take a tour of the vineyard and learn about the wine-making process. Or relax at one of our wine bars, SOMM Wines or Veraison Wine Bar, sipping on a special vintage and snacking on a cheese board.
- Dine Al Fresco
One of the best things about summer is dining al fresco on a local restaurant patio. Fairfield has no shortage of great restaurants with outdoor seating, perfect for a summer meal. With over 30 locally owned establishments featuring food from around the world, you’re in for a dining adventure, no matter what you’re in the mood for.
- Take the Street Art tour
One of the best things about Fairfield is our vibrant arts community. Tucked away in downtown alleyways you’ll discover murals created by local artisans. There’s plenty of art to enjoy indoors as well. ICON contemporary galley features Iowa artists. The Fairfield Art Association Galley and shop lets you interact with local artists and even bring home a creative souvenir. No matter what your artistic taste, you’ll find something to enjoy in Fairfield.
